Breakout Rules Explained (2026)
Breakout — the Kraken-owned crypto prop firm — runs three single-step plans (Classic, Pro, Turbo) plus a 2-Step, all with no minimum trading days, no consistency rule and no time limit. The 2-Step's trailing floor locking at your starting balance is the one mechanic worth understanding closely.
Breakout's plans at a glance
| Plan | Phase | Profit target | Daily loss | Max drawdown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-Step Classic | Single phase | 10% | 4% of prior-day balance | Static, 6% |
| 1-Step Pro | Single phase | 12% | 3% of prior-day balance | Static, 5% |
| 1-Step Turbo | Single phase | 9% | 3% of prior-day balance | Static, 3% |
| 2-Step | Phase 1 | 5% | 5% of prior-day balance | EOD trailing, 8%, locks at starting balance |
| Phase 2 | 10% | 5% of prior-day balance | EOD trailing, 8%, locks at starting balance |
No minimum trading days, no consistency rule, and no time limit on any Breakout plan. Account sizes: $5,000–$100,000 on Classic and 2-Step; $5,000–$200,000 on Pro and Turbo. Leverage is 5:1 on BTC/ETH and 2:1 on altcoins; only one evaluation can be active at a time. Weekend holding and news-event trading are both allowed. Fees are 0.035% per side plus a 0.05%/day swap charge.
How Breakout's drawdown works
Classic, Pro and Turbo all use a static drawdown — a fixed percentage of your starting balance that never moves. Their daily loss limit is different from the drawdown, though: it's calculated as a percentage of your balance at the most recent daily reset (00:30 UTC) rather than your original starting balance, so the dollar amount you can lose in a day shifts as your balance grows or shrinks.
The 2-Step is the outlier: its 8% drawdown is an end-of-day trailing floor that rises with your highest closing-balance high — but it locks at your starting balance once the trailing math would put the floor there or higher. Breakout's own published example: a $105,000 high-water mark produces a floor of $97,000, i.e. the floor has already locked at the $100,000 starting balance rather than continuing to trail upward with your balance.
Notes & unconfirmed details
- The 2-Step's lock-at-starting-balance behavior is confirmed by Breakout's own official example (HWM $105,000 → floor $97,000) — this is the same mechanic TopStep uses, not a guess.

Does Breakout's daily loss limit use my starting balance or a rolling balance?
A rolling balance — it's calculated as a percentage of your balance at the most recent daily reset (00:30 UTC), not your original starting balance. The dollar limit changes day to day as your balance changes.
What happens to Breakout 2-Step's trailing floor once I'm profitable?
It locks at your starting balance once your trailing high-water mark makes the floor reach that level — matching Breakout's own official example (a $105,000 high-water mark produces a $97,000 floor, locked right at a $100,000 starting balance). It never trails past that point.
Can I hold positions over the weekend or trade the news on Breakout?
Yes to both, per Breakout's rules — there's no restriction on weekend holding or news-event trading on any of the four plans.
